How to safety source supplements
In 2023, the dietary supplement industry was valued globally at $86.77 billion and is projected to grow to $93.46 billion in 2024.
As the industry grows and more products flood the market, it is important you stay vigilant of the quality of your purchases as well as any bold claims promising weight loss, cure-alls, and statements like, “boost your energy quickly!”
While tempting, these promises indicate a product that is either ineffective, unsafe, or misleading. That to say, don’t waste your money on products that are not third-party tested and get help from a professional if you have questions or concerns.
It’s important to remember that supplements are meant to supplement your healthy diet, not replace nutrients that are best obtained through properly prepared, nutrient-dense, whole foods. You can’t fix a poor diet with a supplement!
As a Nutritional Therapist, I encourage a food-first approach and the consumption of therapeutic foods to support the root cause of a health concern. There are instances, however, I might recommend a therapeutic supplement to a client based on their lifestyle and bio-individual needs.
Why Choose Third-Party Tested Supplements?
Supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, therefore when selecting supplements, it’s critical to choose products that are third-party tested for quality, safety, and accuracy.
These tests are conducted by independent organizations to verify that the supplement contains what it claims, is free from harmful contaminants, and meets regulatory standards.
Reputable Third-Party Testing Certifications
When choosing a supplement, look for seals from trusted third-party organizations such as:
- NSF International(Certified for Sport)
- USP (United States Pharmacopeia)
- Informed-Sport/Informed-Choice
- ConsumerLab
- BSCG (Banned Substances Control Group)
